Second Grade
Christine Chellino
My name is Lori Peterson and I am thrilled to be teaching 2nd grade again this year. This will be my 11th year in this grade level at Pioneer. I originally come from the high desert in Southern California and having been teaching a total twenty-five years. Before second grade, I taught mainly 4th-6th grades.
I live in Auburn and when I’m not teaching, I like to spend my time outdoors. My favorite activities are hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and riding my bike. I like to bring some of my love of the outdoors into the classroom with special focus on plants and animals native to California. We do research, writing, and special projects related to those topics.
Our reading focus this year will continue to be decoding, comprehension, and fluency. In writing, we are working on writing complete sentences and paragraphs in the three genres: narrative, informational, and persuasive. We will also continue working on writing mechanics such as capitalization and punctuation. Our math focus is number sense: adding/subtracting up to three digits with regrouping. We also work on time, money, and geometric shapes later in the year.
If you’d like to chat about your child’s progress in second grade, please call, email, or stop in after school. My door is always open.
